The Cost Savings of Replacing 400W HID with LED

April 02, 2019

We all know LED saves you money by using less electricity. But how much? What can you expect if you convert a 400W HID Fixture to LED? This simple discussion shows you what you can expect, depending on your cost of electricity.

The Savings when you convert from 400W HID to LED
Many fixtures use a 400W HID bulb, from high bays, flood lights, parking lot lights, shoe box lights and wall packs, to name a few. We know that a 400W HID bulb used 455W when you also include ballast draw. But what does that mean when you convert to LED? How much money can you expect to save, per fixture, per year when you convert to LED? Well that depends on what the wattage of the LED solution is. Here is 3 examples. Always remember, do a photometric first to determine the best option, and then use this guide to determine your savings.
In all 3 cases, we assume a run time of 12 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Case 1: 100W LED Solution
100 LED Watts replacing 400 Watts for 12 hrs/day 365 days/yr saving 1555 kWh/year *

Cost per kWh Savings per year
0.08 $124
0.10 $156
0.12 $187
0.14 $218
0.16 $249
0.18 $280

 * includes ballast draw

Case 2: 120W LED Solution
120 LED Watts replacing 400 Watts for 12 hrs/day 365 days/yr saving 1467 kWh/year *

Cost per kWh Savings per year
0.08 $117
0.10 $148
0.12 $176
0.14 $205
0.16 $235
0.18 $264

 * includes ballast draw

Case 3: 150W LED Solution
150 LED Watts replacing 400 Watts for 12 hrs/day 365 days/yr saving 1336 kWh/year *

Cost per kWh Savings per year
0.08 $107
0.10 $134
0.12 $160
0.14 $187
0.16 $214
0.18 $240

 * includes ballast draw

As you can see, the savings is significant. Multiply this by the number of fixtures you have, and if you want, multiply by 10 to calculate 10 years worth of savings.
